Description

Feather, fur and leather accents adorn a large, wooden Medicine Man kachina carved by Navajo artist Victor Abeita.  The kachina stands on a round base with one leg bent and lifted in the air, both arms out in front of it holding red and brown feathers.  The waist of the kachina is surrounded by brown and red leather, the red accented with turquoise and silver and the brown painted in grey, red and yellow accents.  The Medicine Man’s face is painted turquoise with black eyes and mouth and red and yellow accents, while red and brown feathers finish the top and back of the head and brown and black fur adorn the neck, back and lower legs.  A single turquoise piece is set at the top of the head, attached to which are two long pieces of white leather.  The Medicine Man kachina is said to mix herbs and roots to aid in preventing and curing sickness and in giving advice.  15 1/2″ tall x 5 1/4″ wide x 4 1/2″ wide.
