Description

Carved from a single piece of cottonwood root, this fun kachina doll by Hopi artist William James depicts a chicken.  A yellow beak protrudes from a turquoise and red painted head, wooden feathers protruding upward and outward from the top.  The chicken holds a rattle in one hand and feather in the other, a red painted sash carved across its body and another surrounding its waist, giving way to a wooden garment painted in green, black, and red patterns.  A bracelet is carved around one of the chicken’s wrists with wooden fabric tied around the other, as well as around one knee, and the chicken is finished in a pair of moccasins.  10 3/4″ tall x 5″ wide x 4 1/4″ deep.
