Description

Carved by hand by Hopi artist William Komalestewa, this impressive Snow Maiden represents not only snow, but its life-giving moisture.  The kachina stands atop a thick, round cottonwood root base, both feet planted firmly along its surface. The maiden is intricately carved and painted vibrantly in red, turquoise, black and green, with a shawl wrapped over one shoulder and under its opposite, flowing down the body, along with a fringed sash.  The maiden holds a reed in one hand and a basket containing various items in the other, its hand inserted partially into the basket as well. The maiden’s face is partially covered, a feather flowing out from the mouth and off to one side, while the face is painted in black accents.  11 3/4″ tall x 4 1/2″ wide x 4 1/2″ deep.
