A Guide to Understanding the Meaning & Properties of Turquoise

Perhaps one of the most easily identified stones, turquoise is most widely known for the common bright beautiful blue or green color it emits and is incredibly popular in both women’s and men’s jewelry alike. Not only is turquoise beautiful to look at, but it’s also a fascinating stone that is often associated around the world with unique spiritual properties. Read on to learn more about turquoise and why it’s often the go-to stone when it comes to buying a piece of jewelry for either yourself or a loved one.

Symbolism of Turquoise

While there are many uses for turquoise throughout the world, it is commonly seen in jewelry originating from the southwestern United States as well as from the Middle East. In both places, it is often associated with spiritual elements and is also commonly a symbol of wealth and prosperity. Turquoise is one of the oldest gemstones known to man, and its discovery in different communities across the globe means that it has become an indication of elevated social status for many communities. Commonly seen as an amulet of protection, both Indigenous Peoples and Turkish soldiers would adorn themselves with turquoise in battle or on long journeys to protect themselves from death and injury, often on the traditional naja, or crescent shaped pendant.

Unique Properties of Turquoise

Turquoise is typically found in dry climates and is formed at elevations of between 3,000 and 8,500 feet. Requiring a complex blend of aluminum, copper, phosphorus, and water, the conditions required to produce turquoise are startlingly limited given how popular the stone is. Turquoise mines exist across the world in not only the Southwestern United States, but also in China, Tibet, Iran, Egypt, and Kazakhstan. In its natural form, turquoise is a relatively soft and porous stone, meaning that using it in jewelry can often be challenging without adding enhancements. While high-grade stones can be cut and shaped, most medium to low-grade stones will usually need treatment with epoxy or another clear resin to heighten the color and ensure the shape.

Turquoise in the United States

In the Southwestern United States, turquoise is considered sacred among many Native American tribes. The vibrant blue and green colors often seen in turquoise mimic many different elements of the natural environment, including the sky and water, and thus the stone is particularly symbolic as it representsthe deep connection of Indigenous communities to nature and the land. For these reasons, Native American jewelry traditionally draws heavily upon turquoise in rings, bracelets, belts, and other adornments.
