Description

Carved by hand by Hopi artist T. Fredericks, this impressive kachina doll depicts “Kykotsmova,” or “Hilili,” considered a guard kachina known for his rapid dance during the Powamu and in the night dances.  This depiction stands atop a round base carved with geometric and step patterns painted in turquoise, red and yellow.  One foot is planted entirely on the base while the other rests only on its toes, as if the kachina is about to talk a step.  He holds a stick in each hand, his body elaborately carved in clothing around the waist and along the shoulders, while a substantial beard runs down the front of his body.  The kachina’s tongue is out, resting along the beard, and his eyes are painted in black rectangles surrounded by more colorful turquoise and yellow. Short feathers are carved atop his head, while a sunface protruding off to one side.  10 1/4″ tall x 4″ wide x 4″ deep.
