Hopi Irvin Jojola Butterfly Maiden Kachina Doll

Artist: Irvin Jojola

Expertly hand carved by Hopi artist Irvin Jojola, this gorgeous, traditional kachina doll depicts a Butterfly Maiden.  The piece is carved from a single piece of cottonwood root, the body of the maiden swirling and showcasing an intricate Pueblo scene complete with several rows or spiraling stairs and multiple layers of homes.  Also carved within the body, in the opening at the front center, is a bowl with an offering, painted beautiful in whirlwinds and an avanyu design.  The maiden features an intricately carved necklace surrounding her neck, as well as multiple layers of feathers atop and at the back of her head.  Her face is painted blue with black eyes and mouth, which are also the colors in which her lovely wings are painted, along with white accents.  The remainder of the piece is painted predominantly in black and red, with green, blue, and white accents along the sash at the front, and black patterns painted along the swirls surrounding the Pueblo scene.  The Butterfly Maiden represents the butterfly that lands on flowers, which the medicine man then uses in his medicine.12 1/4″ tall x 3 1/2″ wide x 4 1/2″ deep.
