Acoma potter Loretta Joe chose the traditional parrot, a revered bird among Pueblo peoples, as the central motif for this gorgeous handmade and hand painted jar. The large piece features a black painted rim, followed by rainbow bands in red and orange, in between which traditional feather patterns in black and red are painted. A large parrot is showcased on each of the two wider sides of the piece, painted in orange and black, bordered by both plant and feather designs. The parrot, introduced to Southwestern Native Americans by the Spanish, is said to have led the people to water. 5 /8″ tall x 9 1/2″ wide.
