Description

Depicting an antelope, this impressive, detailed kachina was carved by Hopi artist Myron Gaseoma.  The piece features a rather thick wooden base, atop which the antelope stands on one leg.  The entire antelope is carved out of a single piece of cottonwood, then painted traditionally in various vibrant colors.  A hat rests atop the antelope’s head, its horns protruding out of the top, while feathers extend upward from the back of the hate.  Feathers also hang down from the hat’s brim, and extend outward from the antelope’s ears.  It is carved with a turquoise painted necklace, while its sash is painted in red, black, turquoise, green, purple, and white, with additional turquoise around its wrists.  The antelope holds a rattle in one hand and what appears to be a club in the other.  The Antelope Kachina is said to dance to increase its own species’ numbers, and to bring rain.  15″ tall x 5″ wide x 5″ deep.
