Hopi/Laguna Ray Jose left Handed Kachina Doll

Artist: Ray Jose

1 in stock

Highly skilled Hopi/Laguna carver Ray Jose created this impressive piece by hand, which depicts a traditional Left Handed Kachina.  The Left Handed Kachina is a reversed Kachina, who does everything in the opposite.  Ray’s iteration of the Left Handed Kachina stands atop a tall base, the bottom of which is painted with bricked and additional kachina patterns, the kachinas against a blue sky backdrop with clouds.  The next tier of the base is a thinner piece of wood, followed by a cylindrical shape painted in geometric designs and cloud and rain patterns in green, black, white, yellow, red, and turquoise.  Another cylinder of wood follows, finally leading up to the kachina, who holds a bow in his right hand, outstretched to the sky, and an arrow in his left.  The kachina is predominantly black and white, with a sheath slung over his chest, the strap painted in turquoise and yellow, a couple of arrows at the ready.  The kachina is finished with a black face, open mouth baring teeth and tongue gliding along a beard, with feathers protruding outward from the ears and atop the head.  14″ tall x 3″ wide.
