Description

Carved by late Hopi artist Jocelyn Vote, one of only a handful of female Hopi carvers, this stunning, traditional doll depicts the Hemis kachina. Hemis is a beautiful Kachina representing the celebration and happiness of a successful harvest, apparent in the bowl of fruit this piece holds in one hand.  The kachina stands atop a large cottonwood root base, one foot slightly in front of he other, its moccasins painted brown and black.  Large fronds seem to make up the kachina’s clothing along its lower half, which also features an impressive carved sash pained red and green.  The upper body of the kachina is painted black with turquoise accents, and opposite the hand holding the bowl, the kachina holds a cattail with a smaller depiction of a kachina attached to it.  Additional, smaller fronds surround the kachina’s neck, while a large, impressive tableta surrounds the turquoise painted head, featuring painted designs in black, white, yellow and orange.  Feathers attached to triangles are placed atop each step of the tableta, with additional feathers behind the head.  14 1/2″ tall x 3 7/8″ wide x 4″ deep.
