Hopi Arnold Youvella, Jr. Chakwaina (Estevan the Moor) Kachina Doll

Artist: Arnold Youvella, Jr.

1 in stock

Carved from a single piece of cottonwood root, this stunning, detailed kachina doll depicts “Chakwaina,” or Estevan the Moor, and was created by hand by Arnold Youvella, Jr.  Chakwaina is said to represent Estevan the Moor, who led Fray Marcos de Niza in search of Cibola and was killed at Zuni, and all Chakwaina are warriors.  This piece in particular showcases round eyes painted black and white protruding outward from the head, as well as bared teeth and a long beard.  Feathers rest atop his head, which is also covered in a helmet, while he holds a rattle in one hand and a bow in the other.  He is finished with beautifully carved clothing around his lower half, as well as moccasins on his feet, and is painted in red, turquoise, black and green detail.  9″ tall x 2 1/4″ wide x 3 1/4″ deep.
