Santa Clara potter Gwen Tafoya created this beautiful, traditional wedding vase in her signature style, with etched floral and hummingbird designs. From top to bottom, excluding the handle, hummingbirds swarm over beautifully carved roses. The hummingbirds are so life-like and full of movement, each adorned with a turquoise or coral eye. A small butterfly guards one side of one of the spouts of the vase, set with a turquoise eye. Gwen’s pieces are especially interesting because of her juxtaposition of hummingbirds, considered the stoppers of time, with at least one butterfly, which is regarded as a changer of time. The polished but simple handle of the piece provides a contrast to the remainder of the body, with the center, lower portion of each side showcasing a red color, created by covering just these sections during firing. 10 1/4″ tall x 5 3/4″ wide.
