Santa Clara potter Gwen Tafoya created this beautiful vase in her signature style, with etched floral and hummingbird designs. From top to bottom, hummingbirds swarm over beautifully carved roses. The hummingbirds are so life-like and full of movement, each adorned with a turquoise or coral eye. A small butterfly guards the lower inflection of the vase. Gwen’s pieces are especially interesting, because of her juxtaposition of hummingbirds, considered the stoppers of time, with at least one butterfly, which is regarded as a changer of time. The scalloped rim also provides a contrast to the remainder of the piece with the inner portion showcasing a red color, the product of this portion of the piece being covered during firing. 9 3/4″ tall x 6″ wide.
