Description

Corn, a significant and revered symbol among many Native American cultures, is often given a place of honor in various Native art forms, none of which is more recognizable than the corn maiden.  This iteration, created by Jemez potter Vernida Toya, showcases a lovely woman’s face with mouth open and expressive, black eyes, below which is a panel of corn kernels painted in buff, red, grey, and black.  Corn husks rise upward around the maiden and expand around her head, painted in traditional patterns in white atop a buff base on the inside and with a large corn plant on the outside.  4 7/8″ tall x 3 1/4″ wide x 2 1/4″ deep.
