Wearing jewelry made of turquoise and other stone beads has been part of Native American Indian culture long before the Spanish introduced silver-smithing to the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni Indians.

Over time, Santo Domingo jewelry artists have adhered to the truly native heishi style, creating necklaces primarily of stones and beads, while Navajo, Hopi and Zuni artists have refined their techniques and developed characteristic styles of silver jewelry.

The Native American Indian necklaces at Palms Trading Company exhibit the full array of each Pueblo’s skill and style.

Authentic, Sterling and Genuine Gemstones

Palms Trading Company buys jewelry directly from Native American Indian artists, so each piece is authentic.

Sterling silver necklaces are hand stamped or molded using traditional techniques, including tufa cast and sand cast. Stones are carefully set in sterling silver bezels.

Heishi and other stringed-stone necklaces use genuine gemstones, many of them carefully shaped and polished to snugly fit next to others to create unbroken colored patterns.

The Squash Blossom Necklace

Among the silver-smithing Native American Indian tribes and Pueblos of the Southwest, the squash blossom necklace is one of the most noted traditional patterns. Although squash blossom necklaces can vary widely in the simplicity or intricacy of the designs, the squash blossom is characterized by the “naja” or crescent-shaped pendant. The squash blossom necklace has also been named the state necklace of New Mexico.

The Navajo and Zuni are most commonly associated with the squash blossom pattern. Navajo necklaces often use chunky turquoise stones in the naja and graduated “beads” surrounding it. Zuni najas and beads often showcase their needlepoint craftsmanship.

Necklace Sizing Guidelines

The length of the necklace you choose is important, as the length determines where attention will be drawn. Short necklaces draw attention upward to the face; longer necklaces draw attention downward to the chest.

The Native American Indian necklaces at Palms Trading Company are generally between 16 and 30 inches long. The lengths (with and without pendants) are provided online.
